There are many different types of rocking chair. From traditional through to contemporary, the choice is vast and its difficult to appreciate the variety. But wood rocking chair is here to help. We have an unhealthy interest in rocking chairs, and have spent many hours looking through lots of different designs to try and find the widest variety for you to be able to make a choice. Here’s our quick guide to the different types…
Traditional Rocking Chairs
As the name suggests, this is the sort of rocking chair you would traditionally see in a house. It has two rockers, which are the curved pieces of wood the chair sits on, and the style of the chair is often similar. We’ve found a selection of traditional rocking chairs for you to browse through to see the variety available.
Gliders
Gliders don’t rock on rockers, but they do ‘sway’ in a rocking type motion. Its subtly different from being on rockers because the motion is in fact ‘upside down’. The chair hangs off arms, and instead of your body rocking in an arc where you are at the highest point of your arc in the middle of the rock, it’s the other way round: your at the highest point of your rock at the end of each rock, and at the lowest point in the middle. A lot like being in a swing. Its still a very relaxing motion, and it takes the same amount of energy to keep you rocking, but it’s a bit different. Contemporary
Contemporary is more a style of Rocking Chair than a type, and there’s no limit to the variety that are available. Normally contemporary rocking chairs try to take the design and put a new twist, although the aim is ultimately the same: be able to sit and rock. We’ve teamed up with Amazon, as an affiliate, and here’s a selection of glider rocking chairs (clicking on them takes you straight to Amazon.com):
Outdoor Rocking Chairs
Not surprisingly wood makes an excellent material for outdoor rocking chairs, as long as you keep it treated properly (see our treatment page). Normally to make them really comfortable you’ll need a cushion that doesn’t stay outdoors (see our accessories page for more cushions). We’ve teamed up with Amazon, as an affiliate, and here’s a selection of glider rocking chairs (clicking on them takes you straight to Amazon.com):
Children’s Rocking Chairs
There are thousands (and thousands!) of children’s wooden rocking chairs available. Obviously they’re smaller than adult rocking chairs, but also they come in a variety of shapes to keep your little one amused! We’ve searced high and low for the best in childrens's wood rocking chairs, and in our children's sectin there’s a selection of great ideas for you to choose from. Check them out here.
